Seven public benches installed at measured intervals from the shoulder form the County Bench Distance Trial at the south edge of Larkins Draw, beside a farm-to-market road and a county drainage pond, each with a small sign describing sightline, dust, and conversational effects. It is apparently maintained by the Menard-Larkins County Roadside Amenities Subcommittee, whose stencil appears on the trash receptacle. The benches were reportedly arranged as a permanent demonstration after a disagreement over how close roadside seating ought to be to traffic during a 1990s rest-stop improvement program. The fourth bench, set neither near nor far enough to satisfy anybody, appears to be the one most often photographed.
