The Bequest Bandstand
You are looking at the only bandstand in Hawaii where the program has not changed since March 1948. Under the will of a sugar-company paymaster, the Kapalima Community Band performs the same eleven songs, in the same order, on the first Sunday of each month, and the bequest still pays for it. You will want to be seated by 6:40.
The Former Mill Whistle
Mounted on its original steel post beside the roofless boiler house of the former Kapalima Sugar Company, a cast-iron steam whistle last sounded on July 13, 1979, the afternoon the mill's boilers were banked for the final time. A laminated card wired below it, refreshed on what residents describe as an irregular basis by the Kapalima Community Association, still carries a testing schedule — first Monday of the month, 6:45 a.m. — although the whistle has had no steam to sound with since decommissioning, and the schedule is understood locally to record when the test would occur, were there a boiler to supply it. One hook detail needing confirmation: several residents maintain the post was straightened and the bell repainted after a 1994 storm, a repair nowhere reflected in the county's capital improvement records for that fiscal year, and that whoever did the work has never been identified by the Association. Full documentation will likely require a correspondent willing to sit through a monthly meeting.
