The Tuesday Warm Gravel Verge
A 140-foot strip of gravel shoulder along a county pull-off beside former orchard ground at the west edge of Marlow Point is locally noted as the Tuesday Warm Gravel Verge for becoming noticeably warm to the touch on Tuesday afternoons from late May through September. The Benton-Linn Soil and Water Interpretive Committee appears to maintain the modest sign, bench, and thermometer post, though the county roads department is named on the trash barrel. Residents attribute the warming to shallow drainage tile, dark aggregate, and a very specific pattern of sun exposure after weekly irrigation releases uphill. The hook, and the reason this location merits a proper visit, is a laminated chart showing hand-recorded temperatures from 1998 to 2011, with several annotations regarding a temporary resurfacing dispute that reportedly altered the effect for one season.
Whale Costco
A 480-foot reinforced-concrete gray whale on the central Oregon coast, originally poured as the shell of a marine-themed walk-through attraction and now operating as a standard membership warehouse. The food court is located directly beneath the blowhole, which functions as a skylight and code-mandated smoke vent.
